In the galaxy zoo, members of the public can help astronomers by looking at pictures of far-flung galaxies and – so sweet! – tagging them.
Turns out that good old pattern recognition still requires human eyeballs. Computers just couldn’t pull off this level of complexity, but an army of starloving office workers on their lunch break? Absolutely. Job done.
(For the sake of this post, I have chosen to define visual tags as metadata, so yes, it does count.)
